Jan was born in 1895 in Buffelspoort, Rustenburg.  Jan's father was Adriaan Willem Jansen van Rensburg and his mother was Petronella Margaretha Jansen van Rensburg.  His paternal grandparents were Adriaan Willem Janse van Rensburg and Margaretha Gertruida van Schalkwyk (Aletta Cecilia). He had three brothers and three sisters, named Willem, Willem, Petrus, Anna, Margaretha and Petronella.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
