Hester was born on September 11th, 1913. Hester's father was David Schalk Maartens and her mother was Hester Johanna Wilhemina Dippenaar (Frederika). Her paternal grandparents were Francois Maartens and Martha Johanna Petronella Charlotta Kruger (Christoffelina); her maternal grandparents were Jan Lodewyk Dippenaar and Gertruida Izabella Marais. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Francois, Jan, Gertbreg and Martha. She was the third oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Alwyn and Christina.-
