Jacobus was born on November 16th, 1856 in Bloemfontein. Jacobus' father was Joachim Hendrik Maartens and his mother was Catharina Anna Francina Groenewald (Elizabeth). His paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Maartens and Martha Margaretha Maria Joubert; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Hermanus Groenewald and Maria Margaretha Groenewald (Susanna). He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Francois, David, Maria, Catharina, Hendrina, Jacoba, Martha, Margaretha, Petronella and Johanna. He was the second oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Joachim and Maria. He died before 1936.General Notes
