Hendrik was born on September 1st, 1801 and his baptism took place on March 7th, 1802 in Stellenbosch. Hendrik's father was Jacobus Martens and his mother was Maria Magdalena Joubert. His paternal grandparents were Joachim Heinrich Martens and Jacomina van den Berg. He was an only child. He died at the age of 85 on February 27th, 1887 in Greytown. He was buried in Sophiadale.
