His paternal grandparents were Hendrik van Heijningen and Wilhelmina Gerritdina Kits; his maternal grandparents were Everhardus Ketel and Sicillia Geertruida van Hoeij-Schilthouwer (Sophia). He had a brother named John. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother named Petrus.-
