Catharina was born on September 2nd, 1876 and her baptism took place on March 26th, 1877 in Barkley East. Catharina's father was Paulus Johannes Maartens and her mother was Emmerentia Hester Johanna Reyneke. Her paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Martens and Louisa Maria Grobbelaar; her maternal grandparents were Reyneke and NN. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named Joachim, Hermanus, Paul, Eva, Louisa, Emarens, Elizabeth, Jacoba, Susara, Martha and Cecilia. She was the second youngest of the twelve children.
