Cornelius was born on August 3rd, 1901 and his baptism took place on September 1st, 1901. Cornelius' father was Cornelius Hermanus Maartens and his mother was Susanna Johanna Adriana Beukes. His paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Maartens and Anna Cecilia Myburg; his maternal grandparents were Johannes Andries Beukes and Gertruida Maria Kruger. He had a brother and four sisters, named Hendrik, Gertruida, Susanna, Johanna and Martha. He was the youngest of the six children.-
