Joachim's father was Nicolaas Francois Maartens and his mother was Anna Catharina Els. His paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Maartens and Cornelia Herculina van Wyk. He had a brother named Jan. He was the older of the two children. He died due to Tetanus at the age of 83 on January 25th, 1996 in Durban.General Notes
