Mathys was born on December 1st, 1902 and his baptism took place on September 6th, 1903 in Bloemfontein. Mathys' father was Matthys Daniel Martens and his mother was Susanna Maria Bezuidenhout. His paternal grandparents were Albertus Stephanus Rudolf Martens and Jane Younger; his maternal grandparents were Leonard Bernard Bezuidenhout and Martha Maria Wenekis. He had a brother and three sisters, named Albertus, Martha, Jane and Susanna. He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Matthys. He died due to heart disease, Hypertension , at the age of 93 on July 4th, 1996 in Krugersdorp.General Notes
