The area is reached via the tarred R600 and leads up the Sterkspruit River Valley, offering dramatic views of the rounded dome of Champagne Castle, the jagged-edged Sterkhorn Peak and the rock massif known as Cathkin. The last-mentioned is also known as Mdedelelo, which means 'the bully' in Zulu and describes its apparent eagerness to push the lesser peaks in the area out of its way.
These mountains were being tackled by climbers in the late 1800s but it was not until the 1920s that the full recreational potential of the area was recognised. In July 1928 the Natal Mountain Club held its annual July Camp at Oom Hendrik Martens's farmstead. It was a raging success and within two years Oom Hendrik had established the Champagne Castle Hotel.
