Henry was born on July 8th, 1910 in Pietermaritzburg and his baptism took place on July 21st, 1910. Henry's father was Henry (Harry) John Thomas Martens and his mother was Regina Elisabeth Bester. His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens (Philippus) and Elizabeth (Annie) Ann Magnus; his maternal grandparents were Abraham Izak Bester (Jakob) and Paulina Maria Pretorius (Elisabeth). He had two sisters named Regina and Sheila. He was the youngest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Wally and Wriggles. He died from a stroke at the age of 82 on February 23rd, 1993 in Pietermaritzburg. He was buried in DOORNHOEK FARM CEMETARY.
