John Thomas Martens (Jan Thomas) 
John was born on March 8th, 1881 and his baptism took place on November 1st, 1882. John's father was Jacobus Joshua Francois Martens and his mother was Susanna Elisabeth Martens. His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelis Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Hendrik, Jacobus, Francois, Magrietha, Frederika, Tant Pauli, Maria, Susanna, Christina, Marthina and Wilhelmina. He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children. He had two half-sisters named Elizabeth and Duckie. He died at the age of 21 on May 6th, 1902 in Holkrans, Vryheid.General Notes
