Dewald was born on December 29th, 1894. Dewald's father was Josua Joachim Francois Martins and his mother was Sophia Elizabeth Frederika Bronkhorst. His paternal grandparents were Dewald Jozua Martens and Hester Cornelia Pretorius; his maternal grandparents were R J Bronkhorst and Diena de Beer. He had a brother and two sisters, named Rudolph, Dina and Hester. He was the second youngest of the four children.-
