Matthys was born on January 7th, 1877 and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1877 in Barkley East.  Matthys' father was Nicolaas Francois Maartens and his mother was Cecilia Maria Coetzee.  His paternal grandparents were Joachim Hendrik Martens and Louisa Maria Grobbelaar; his maternal grandparents were Gert Lodewikus Coetzee and Cecilia Maria Kuhn. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Joachim, Gert, Nicolaas, Daniel, Louisa, Magdalena, Cecilia and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Willem and Aletta.  He died due to a cardiac arrest, Myocardial dgeneration, at the age of 65 on July 18th, 1942 in Matatiele.  He was buried in MATATIELE, Public cemetery.
