Mathys (46) was shot dead at his farm in Theunissen in the Free State on 18th February 1992, when he found three robbers in his kitchen.

A man, alleged to have been involved in Mathys's murder, shot himself in the head after being pursued by police, said police liaison officer Lt-Col. Johan Fourie. He was in critical condition in a Welkom hospital. The other two suspects were apprehended by the police.
