Nomos Launches Gold Versions of the Tangente Neomatik and Ludwig: Collector's Editions
These two iconic gold timepieces from the brand remain remarkably affordable.
When Nomos is mentioned, its cool designs and youthful interpretation of classic Glashütte German watchmaking often conjure images of a refined yet relatively accessible stainless steel timepiece. Of course, the Nomos collection also includes some high-end models, such as the Lux and Lambda, and sometimes even more luxurious gold special editions, such as the recently launched Tangente rose gold Lange dial watch. Now, the German brand breaks with convention, launching more luxurious precious metal versions of two iconic models. However, even from a value-for-money perspective, these two gold Tangente Neomatik and Ludwig watches still retain the essence of Nomos.
TANGENTE GOLD NEOMATIK
Seeing Nomos' iconic timepiece—the timeless classic Tangente—presented in a gold case feels perfectly natural. Indeed, Tangente watches, with their understated Bauhaus design, compact case proportions, distinctive dials, and near-bezel-less shape, have always given me the impression of dress watches. Now, Tangente watches crafted from precious metals further reinforce this feeling.
What we see now are three Tangente Gold Neomatik watches, which, apart from the materials, are identical to other models in the collection, such as this Tangente Doré version (steel case with gold hands). All three Tangente Gold watches use the same 35mm diameter case, only 6.9mm thick, which is quite considerable for an automatic watch. The case is made of 3N gold, but retains classic elements of the Tangente collection: slanted lugs, cylindrical profile, polished finish, double-sided sapphire crystal, and 50-meter water resistance.
Three watches were launched this time (we only photographed two of them), all adhering to Tangente's classic style and layout. Two of them (as shown in the picture) feature silver-plated dials and can be equipped with blued steel or gold hands. One has a soft and understated style, while the other is more distinctive, creating a striking contrast. The third model features a dark gray ruthenium-plated dial, with a warm and substantial feel. All printed text and hands are gold.
The case houses the DUW 3001 movement, also known as Neomatik, a slim automatic movement with an in-house escapement (balance wheel system), a frequency of 3 Hz, and a power reserve of 43 hours. True to Nomos' style, the case is decorated with delicate pinstripes and perlage. This watch comes with a horsehide leather strap, available in brown or black depending on the model. For Nomos, this price is above average, but still quite reasonable for a solid gold watch.
35mm x 6.9mm 18K 3N gold case, polished, sapphire crystal, 50m water resistance – silvered dial with gold or blued steel hands; ruthenium-plated dial with gold hands – DUW 3001 Neomatik movement, automatic winding, 3Hz frequency, balance wheel system, 43-hour power reserve, hour, minute, and small seconds display – brown or black horsehide leather strap – Models: 161 (silver dial, blued steel hands), 162 (silver dial, gold hands), 163 (ruthenium dial) – Evergreen collection.
Ludwig: The second timepiece crafted from gold is the Ludwig, which interprets the classic Nomos design philosophy in a more understated way. At first glance, the Ludwig appears to be a variation of the Tangente, but closer inspection reveals significant differences. The Ludwig features softer lines, a more rounded and slender case with a barrel-shaped profile, paired with straight lugs and a domed sapphire crystal. Again, the gold case design is seamlessly integrated, further enhancing the series' elegant character.
Nomos has chosen to present the classic manual-winding version as a gold sub-series, with a 35mm diameter and a thickness of only 6.3mm. However, note that the lugs are relatively long, making it more noticeable on the wrist than you might expect. This series is available in two versions, both with silvered dials and optional gold or blued steel hands. One of the main differences from the Tangente series is the use of Roman numeral hour markers and a railway-style minute track, creating a more understated visual effect.
The case houses the DUW 4001 movement, an upgraded version of the Alpha movement (based on the Peseux 7001), equipped with the brand's in-house Swing system, extending the power reserve to 53 hours. The Ludwig Gold collection features watches with brown or black horsehide leather straps. This collection is part of the regular product line and can be optionally fitted with a solid gold or sapphire crystal case back.
