Anna was born on October 25th, 1887 and her baptism took place on February 19th, 1888 in Cedarville. Anna's father was Adriaan Lowrens Albertus Maartens and her mother was Aletta (Hannie) Johanna Magdalena van der Merwe. Her paternal grandparents were Hendrik Joachim Maartens and Elizabeth Magdalena van Jaarsveld; her maternal grandparents were David Frederik van der Merwe (Stephanus) and Sagryda Catharina van Dyk. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Joachim, David, Adriaan, Matthys, <Unknown>, Johannes, Nicolaas, Catharina, Elizabeth, Aletta and Nellie.
